Quick Start Guide

Video Tutorial
1. Registering an Account

An introduction to the BOLD Student Data Portal website. This video provides an overview of the system and describes how to register and create a course.

2. Submitting Data

This video follows the submission of a DNA barcode record from the specimen data all the way to the sequence. It focuses on the student interface, but it allows instructors to follow the steps students will need to undertake in order to create their records.

3. Overseeing a course

This video provides an overview of the tools available to instructors to monitor student work and participation. It also describes the steps needed in validating and approving student-generated data for publication on BOLD and GenBank.

Overview

The BOLD University Student Data Portal (BOLD-UNI) is a classroom-focused interface to the BOLD (Barcode of Life Data Systems) database. This platform provides the tools necessary for instructors and students to make contributions to the global DNA barcode library used for species identification by scientists and institutions worldwide. BOLD-UNI allows students to upload and analyze their own specimen and sequence data in a user-friendly environment. The portal incorporates a number of checks to increase the probability that students comply with important data standards and have the best opportunity to publish their data. It also enables instructors to monitor student progress, evaluate their work and provide them with real-time feedback.

Students can explore the large database of DNA barcode records submitted by scientists around the world, and add their own data to the ever-growing DNA barcoding library.
