Celebrating 10 Years of the BOLD University Student Data Portal

After 10 years of supporting hands-on biodiversity learning, the BOLD University Student Data Portal (BOLD-UNI) is being formally retired on April 30th, 2026. Through support from the University of California, San Diego and the enthusiasm of educators across the world, the BOLD-UNI enabled:

  • 684 instructors
  • 905 classes
  • 1,084 students

Together, students analyzed and contributed 1,084 records to BOLD — a meaningful accomplishment that showcases the impact of classroom-driven science.

Although the BOLD-UNI platform is being decommissioned, we continue to explore new funding opportunities and remain committed to supporting student participation in biodiversity research.

A New Opportunity: BugQuest

We’re excited to introduce BugQuest, a national initiative inviting schools and communities across Canada to collect insects using simple, standardized protocols, and identify them through DNA barcoding. BugQuest carries forward the spirit of student involvement in real scientific discovery.

Explore the New BOLD Experience

We encourage former SDP users to explore the latest version of BOLD, featuring refreshed tools and resources such as:

  • V5 ID Engine
  • V5 Public Data Portal
  • Knowledge Hub and more!

Thank you for being part of the BOLD-UNI story.
